Women's 125th Anniversary Commemorative Quilt.
During the development of Quilting the Armour, the idea of making a Kelly
women's quilt was introduced to the community. Interest was bolstered when Chris
Dormer and Noelene Allan became enthused and decided to complete the quilt in time
for the 2006 Beechworth Kelly Event.
With the help
of a small band of quilters and textile artists, the quilt was completed. In conjunction
with a Talk about Ellen Kelly, given by local historian, quilter and performer Noelene
Allan, local Kelly enthusiast and descendant of Tom Lloyd, Noeleen Lloyd launched
the quilt. The Beechworth Courthouse was full, and the womens' event very well recived.
"The quilt is wonderful. On first glance it appears nothing special, but more thoughtful
inspection reveals a humble, sombre work with occasional flashes of colour, much
like Ellen's life really," said Jeannie Haughton, who originated the idea, "I particularly
like the use of the black and grey fabrics, and the bed ticking which binds the
piece. It is also interesting to see most quilters identified strongly with Ellen
Kelly."
This website is designed to foster an interest in the Kelly women's stories and
to explore both historic and contemporary understandings of their lives and the
significant roles they played in the life of Ned Kelly.
