This website is not an expert
site. It is a gathering of information from mostly secondary sources, both fact
and fiction, which we devoured during the research and development stages of writing
the play, Quilting the Armour. It does not set out to be complete or authoritative.
Instead it is hoped the information will initiate the readers interest and encourage
others to further investigate the lives of the women affected by the tragic events
surrounding the Kelly gang.
There was much background we needed to understand
before we could make sense of the events about which we wanted to write, and the
information may be of interest to others.
We relied heavily on the works of Ian Jones, the
Kelly historian who has spent much of his life researching and establishing a picture
of the times. Ian is one of the few historians and writers to include the women
in his writings, and was very generous in sharing his expertise with us. Dagmar
Balcarek also recognised the importance of the women, and has written about them.
Gary Dean generously shared shared his time and passion with us. The Wangaratta
Museum assisted our research and showed us their treasures.
We pored over every Kelly book we could lay our
hands on, visited the Beechworth and the Melbourne State Libraries, and the historic
precincts, museums and gaols in the Kelly story. We can assure the mildly curious
that the story is complex and very moving, and any investment of time spent exploring
the lives of the Kelly family and other families involved, including the stories
of the policemen and their families, will be well rewarded.

Without the kindness and support
of the Glenrowan and Wangaratta Communities, and organisations from Glenrowan, Beechworth

Shenanigans on the Ovens Goldfields: The 1859 Election
Author: O'BRIEN, TONY:
The Victorian general election of 1859 occurred during a
time of social transition and electoral reformation. Gold discoveries, including
those on the Ovens, triggered the Victorian miners' insistent demands for access
to land and participation in the political process. This book identifies social
issues, which emerged during the election on the Ovens goldfields, surrounding Beechworth,
Stanley, Yackandandah, Myrtleford and Chiltern.
